General Secretary Xi Jinping’s speech at the Symposium on Philosophy and Social Sciences in 2016 is a landmark text that connects the past and the future in the formation of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture. From the current perspective of the systematic and theoretical development of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture, the overarching proposition of developing philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics put forward in the "May 17 Speech" ultimately points to the construction of China’s independent knowledge system. Following the internal logic of this proposition, to build China’s independent knowledge system, we must take Marxism as the ideological guide, draw awareness of issues from China’s practice, focus on refining iconic concepts and original theories, and establish the independent status of Chinese philosophy and social sciences through discourse communication that integrates Chinese and foreign elements.

    Abstract ( 63 )   HTML ( 10 )   PDF (1628KB) ( 37 )   Save

Since the beginning of the new era, China has comprehensively built a moderately prosperous society, successfully embarked on a new journey of fully building a modern socialist country, formulated new "two-step" strategic goals, and created a distinctive new theoretical paradigm of "parallel modernization" through its new practice of Chinese-style modernization. The formation of this major theoretical system has enabled the academic community to gradually break free from the shackles of Westernization, constructing an independent knowledge system for the theory of China's social development around core issues such as social structural transformation, social governance innovation, social mentality adjustment, social security improvement, and cultural change adaptation. "Parallel modernization" provides theoretical support and practical reference for understanding the laws of China's social development and solving the modernization challenges faced by developing countries.

Xi Jinping Thought on Culture and the Creative Transformation of Traditional Chinese Ecological Culture
    Huang Chengliang
    2026, 8 (2):  31-43.
    Abstract ( 27 )   HTML ( 3 )   PDF (1590KB) ( 16 )   Save

The creative transformation of traditional Chinese ecological culture is the convergence and integration of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture and Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization under the methodology of the “Second Integration”, and also lays the cultural foundation for constructing an independent knowledge system of China’s ecological civilization. Starting from the inherent compatibility between Marxism and traditional ecological culture in the outlook on nature, dialectical thinking and value orientation, this paper responds to the theoretical issue of the feasibility of the “Second Integration” in the ecological field. Under the methodological guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture, this paper holds that the “soul vein” of Marxism activates the traditional “root vein” to endow it with scientificity and modernity, while the traditional “root vein” nourishes Marxism to endow it with nationality and cultural attributes, thus solving the practical issue of realizing the “Second Integration”. The organic integration of the “soul vein” and the “root vein” gives birth to Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization as a new cultural life form, which is not only the latest achievement of adapting Marxism to the Chinese context and the needs of the times, but also a model of the creative transformation and innovative development of fine traditional Chinese culture, answering the question of what achievements the “Second Integration” has made.

The Construction of China's Independent Knowledge System of Demography in the Context of Major Demographic Shifts
    Yang Juhua
    2026, 8 (2):  44-56.
    Abstract ( 14 )   HTML ( 3 )   PDF (1820KB) ( 12 )   Save

Population issues have always been fundamental, long-term, and strategic matters in economic and social development. Since the turn of the 21st century, China has witnessed profound changes in population size, quality, structure, and distribution. The unique logic of its demographic transition has increasingly transcended the explanatory boundaries and applicability of Western demographic theories. Grounded in the reality of China's profound demographic transformation, this paper systematically reviews the development trajectory, distinctive achievements, and research limitations of Chinese demography, and explores the key issues, practical directions, and construction pathways for developing an independent knowledge system of demography in China. The study argues that in the new era, the construction of China's independent knowledge system of demography must anchor itself to the contemporary context, clarify its value orientations, and solidify its research methodologies. This involves establishing core principles to define the fundamental guidelines for building an independent knowledge system, facilitating its standardized and localized development through multiple practical pathways, and strengthening long-term support mechanisms to ensure the effective implementation of the system. Ultimately, this endeavor aims to provide theoretical support and intellectual contributions for promoting high-quality population development and advancing Chinese-style modernization.

The Sublimation of Democracy: The Innovativeness of the Chinese-style Democratic Exploration
    Yan Jirong, Chen Huipeng
    2026, 8 (2):  57-68.
    Abstract ( 112 )   HTML ( 4 )   PDF (1621KB) ( 31 )   Save

Democracy is a political ideal and governance path commonly pursued by humanity, and also a vital symbol of political modernization. In the 21st century, the liberal democratic system centered on competitive elections has increasingly revealed problems such as simplification, populism, oligarchization, polarization, and inefficiency. It faces increasingly evident structural difficulties in public opinion absorption, social integration, and effective governance. Against this backdrop, re-examining the essence of democracy and exploring more rational democratic institutions has become an important task for contemporary democratic theorists. Based on this, this paper adopts the evolutionary logic of democracy constantly responding to real-world challenges and achieving institutional leaps through crises as its analytical framework. On the basis of examining the two historical leaps of democracy in the past and their contemporary crises, it explores the possible direction for a third leap in democracy.

The Stage-specific Characteristics of China's Population Development and Modernization Governance in the Era of Population Reduction Considerations
    Yuan Xin, Yu Jiahao
    2026, 8 (2):  69-79.
    Abstract ( 30 )   HTML ( 5 )   PDF (1685KB) ( 13 )   Save

The defining characteristic of Chinese path to modernization is its massive population scale, which constitutes the foundational strategic reliance for modernization development. Under the long-term effects of low birth rates and rapid aging, China's compressed demographic transition is pronounced, marking an irreversible demographic decline era. Population fluctuations now pose systematic challenges to socioeconomic development and national security, presenting complex issues for modernization efforts while testing the resilience and sustainability of modernization. Based on China's demographic evolution trends and the "two-step" modernization strategic goals, this paper categorizes China's population development under reduced growth conditions into three stages: (1) the population peak period (2022-2035) characterized by maintaining historical peak population levels while gradually declining before achieving basic socialist modernization; (2) the population plateau period (2036-2050) marked by accelerated decline but still massive scale before fully building a modern socialist power; and (3) the population decline period (2051-2100) featuring accelerated population reduction following comprehensive national modernization. By analyzing China's unique demographic transition trajectory and its multidimensional impacts, this study proposes a "three-stage adaptation-three-dimensional coordination" modernization governance system that integrates "investing in people" with "investing in material resources," establishing an incremental, comprehensive governance approach to provide theoretical support and practical guidance for coordinated advancement of high-quality population development and modernization construction.

A Study on the Characteristics of Current Chinese Peasant Differentiation: With a Discussion on the Future of Smallholder Farming in a Large Country
    Su Hongjian
    2026, 8 (2):  80-93.
    Abstract ( 32 )   HTML ( 4 )   PDF (1893KB) ( 15 )   Save

Clarifying the characteristics of farmer differentiation is fundamental to understanding the basic national condition of "a large country with small farmers" and to promoting comprehensive rural revitalization. This paper constructs a systematic analytical framework for farmer differentiation and analyzes the characteristics of farmer differentiation using data from the 2024 China Rural Revitalization Survey (CRRS 2024). In terms of employment differentiation, among the individual agricultural labor force, approximately 36% are fully engaged in farming, 38% are engaged in non-agricultural employment, and 15% are part-time farmers. Regarding household employment patterns, pure farming households account for 20%, while part-time farming households account for nearly 60%. In terms of household differentiation, the ratio of off-farm households, smallholder households, and scale-operated households is approximately 30:62:8. Regarding income differentiation, nearly half of all farm households fall into the low- to middle-income category or below. The average income level of pure farming households is significantly lower than that of off-farm households, while the income level of part-time farming households varies according to their specific part-time employment patterns. In terms of residential differentiation, nearly one-quarter of farm households own housing beyond their own agricultural homestead, with 92% of these additional properties located within the same city or county. Distinct characteristics of farmer differentiation exist across regions, depending on their agricultural territorial features and levels of economic development. In the future, it is essential to base policies on the fundamental national condition of "a large country with small farmers," adapt to the characteristics and trends of farmer differentiation, and comprehensively promote farmer development and enhance their well-being.

The Evolution, Dynamics, and Structure of the Stepwise Development of Socialist Modernization
    Yang Wensheng
    2026, 8 (2):  94-104.
    Abstract ( 44 )   HTML ( 4 )   PDF (1250KB) ( 28 )   Save

The stepwise development of socialist modernization is a groundbreaking proposition put forward by the Communist Party of China in the new stage. Researching and elucidating its main connotations from three dimensions—stage theory, dynamics theory, and structure theory—is essential for constructing the discourse system of the Chinese path to modernization. From the perspective of stage theory, the stepwise development of socialist modernization exhibits a basic form that integrates gradualism and leapfrog progress, follows a dynamic logic combining historical initiative and historical patience, and creates a practical mechanism that unifies strategic planning and tactical implementation. From the perspective of dynamics theory, the stepwise development of socialist modernization relies on three driving forces: the transformative dynamics of dominant factors within the productive forces system, the adaptive dynamics of production relations to the development of productive forces, and the adaptive dynamics of the superstructure to the increasing complexity of the economic base. From the perspective of structure theory, the stepwise development of socialist modernization follows a trajectory from one-dimensional to multidimensional structural optimization, a dynamic structure characterized by the cyclical interplay between "breadth" and "depth," and an overarching structure that integrates regularity and purposiveness.

The Narrative System and Transformation Logic of Iconic Concepts in the Construction of a Cultural Power
    Xue Yonglong, Hao Lixin
    2026, 8 (2):  105-115.
    Abstract ( 84 )   HTML ( 13 )   PDF (1430KB) ( 34 )   Save

Refining iconic concepts serves as a key focal point for constructing China's narrative system, as the two are logically embedded and value oriented in the same direction. As a vital spiritual force underpinning national rejuvenation, building a culturally powerful country has gained increasingly prominent strategic status, and the narrative framework of its iconic concepts has gradually taken shape. The iconic concepts for building a cultural power in the new era are characterized by indigenous origin and creation, continuity of historical inheritance, commanding cognitive function, stability of intrinsic meaning, strategic discourse orientation, and communicative narrative expression. Taking these features as the criterion scale, an iconic concept narrative system has been formed that runs through the principles and methods, political guidance, spiritual pursuit, value destination, cultural stance and practical strategy of building a cultural power. The narrative of iconic concepts hinges on modern transformation. Specifically, on the basis of grasping the structural logic of the narrative system, it should calibrate the practical orientation, help build an independent cultural knowledge system, lead the innovation of cultural discourse, inherit cultural values and ideas, and advance the international communication of Chinese culture, so as to realize two way interaction and coupled progress between theoretical deepening and practical expansion.

A Political Economic Analysis of Digital and Intelligent Transformation Driving the Optimization and Upgrading of Traditional Industries
    Yang Tianyu, Liao Xiaoxuan
    2026, 8 (2):  116-124.
    Abstract ( 25 )   HTML ( 4 )   PDF (1159KB) ( 22 )   Save

The Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China explicitly proposed to "optimize and upgrade traditional industries" and "promote the digital and intelligent transformation of the manufacturing sector." This paper examines the theoretical logic and practical models of how digital and intelligent transformation drives the optimization and upgrading of traditional industries. The research finds that digital and intelligent transformation brings about a dual transformation in the mode of production of traditional industries: the intellectualization of the labor process and the networking of industrial organization. This transformation comes into conflict with existing relations of production in property rights and distribution, thus necessitating the establishment of new relations of production centered on the definition of data property rights and platform governance norms. Only after adaptive adjustments in relations of production can traditional industries fully unleash the potential of digital and intelligent transformation, ultimately achieving comprehensive optimization and upgrading in production efficiency, organizational forms, and value creation. Building on this analysis, the paper proposes four practical models for optimizing and upgrading traditional industries: intelligent production, servitization extension, ecological collaboration, and governance structure innovation.
